The painting with egg tempera: painting an altarpiece in the Middle Ages

Ages: from 6 to 14 years old. Workshop adaptable to each age bracket.

Workshop duration: 1 hour and a half approximately.

Location: interior

The technique of painting with egg tempera was really appreciated in the Middle Ages, espe-cially to paint the altarpieces of bright colours decorating the churches.

However, we already find examples in Greek or Roman times and until the appearance of oil painting. In this workshop we will use the egg yolk as a binder and we will mix it with different pigments to make coloured paints. Finally, we will apply it on paper and wood.
